Dr Matthew Williams
Matthew joined the O’Hare Group as a Part II student in 2021 and continued with the group for his DPhil in Inorganic Chemistry. His doctoral research focused on the exfoliation of layered inorganic materials, particularly layered double hydroxides (LDHs), to produce ultra-high surface area materials and to explore how their properties can be tailored for different applications.
During his DPhil, Matthew developed facile approaches for producing high surface area LDH nanosheets and established these materials as a versatile platform for energy and environmental applications. His research has explored their use in direct air capture of CO₂, electrocatalytic green hydrogen production, and photocatalysis, as well as collaborative projects investigating heavy-metal sequestration from contaminated water and the recovery of critical minerals.
More broadly, Matthew is interested in developing scalable inorganic materials that can address challenges in sustainable energy, carbon management, water treatment and resource recovery. Outside the lab, he coaches and plays hockey for the University and enjoys wild swimming and the great outdoors.
